Laboratorys

Many practical classes and theses and dissertations of the Program require laboratory testing. Parts of these analyses are made in the very laboratories of the Department of Engineering. Other analyses are made in laboratories of other departments, such as the laboratories of the Department of Food Science and the foliar analysis laboratories and fertility of soils, in the Departments of Chemistry and Soil Sciences, respectively. In addition to the infrastructure of the University, distributed in its various departments and laboratories, the students of master’s and doctorate degrees in Agricultural Engineering count with a specific infrastructure for each area of concentration:

LABORATORY OF WATER AND EFFLUENTS TREATMENT

In this laboratory are performed the chemical analyses of water and liquid effluents from dairy, pig farming and washing and pulping of coffee, as well as the water after the treatment of these effluents, for research related to wastewater treatment, anaerobic digestion and biogas production.

LABORATORY OF SOIL MECHANICS

This laboratory develops analyses for research on Rural Construction and Agricultural Mechanization, with presses for trials of soils density; shear strength of soils; simple compression resistance in soils; CBR in soils; triaxial compression resistance in soils; mini-MCV in soils; soil permeability; soil compaction; bottle of sand in the soil; speedy in situ in soil; penetrometer in situ in soil; soil screening; soil sedimentation; specific mass of the solid; soil liquid; soil plasticity limit; soil shrinkage limit etc.

LABORATORY OF MACHINES FOR PLANTING, SOWING AND SOLID INPUTS DISTRIBUTION.

Seeder-fertilizer machine of continuous flow with mechanical seed dosing system;
– precision seeder-fertilizer machine, zero tillage and conventional planting, with pneumatic seed dosing system;
– Didactic module, willing on easel, with pneumatic seed feeder;
– Separated line for zero tillage, with mechanical disk feeder;
– Didactic module, willing on easel, of a mechanical seed feeder of inclined disks;
– Test bench consisting of an electric motor, WEG brand, of 0.25 HP, a variable speed drive;

LABORATORY OF AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTS PROCESSING

The Laboratory of Agricultural Products Processing, located in the Department of Engineering, has 200 m2 consisting of a classroom, a laboratory, a graduate students room and a cold chamber. It has two rooms for the support of graduate students associated with the agricultural products processing area and a storage chamber with thermally insulated wall and equipped with air conditioner keeping the temperature of 15 °C in its interior. The classroom has 25 individual benches for theoretical and practical classes, physical and structural analysis and classification of agricultural products.

CENTER OF COFFEE POST-HARVEST TECHNOLOGY

The Center of Post-Harvest Technology, coordinated by the professor Flávio Meira Borém, of the Department of Engineering, is located in the Center for Research and Extension of Coffee Agribusiness – CEPECAFÉ, of the Federal University of Lavras, and is intended both to the development of research on post-harvest coffee area as well as to education and extension, supporting several graduate programs of UFLA.
The center consists of a receiving hopper, coffee washer, pulper and mucilage remover; 2000 m
2 of concrete yard and asphaltic mud; shed for coffee drying equipped with elevator, two hoppers, two hoppers, two dryers of 5000L, two wood-fired furnaces, two gas burners and horizontal conveyor; warehouse containing four bins lined with wood with storage capacity of 1000 bags of coffee and a machine for coffee processing.

CENTER OF TECHNOLOGY AND QUALITY OF COFFEE

The Center of Technology and Quality of Coffee is located in the Center for Research and Extension of Coffee Agribusiness – CEPECAFÉ of the Federal University of Lavras, and is intended both to the development of research on quality of coffee as well as to education and extension, supporting several graduate programs of UFLA.
The Center of Technology and Quality of Coffee has a laboratory for chemical analysis, a laboratory for physical analysis, a laboratory for sensory analysis, a toaster unit, a storage chamber, a staging laboratory, three professors’ rooms, male and female bathroom. It is equipped with a pH meter, a conductivimeter, a distiller, a deionizer, an oven, a humidity meter, a chapel of exhaustion, 20 classification tables, ten sets of sieves, a precision analytical balance, two semi-analtical scales, five tasting tables, 200 tasting cups, oven, glassware and other materials.
