Objectives:

The objective of the Graduate Program in Biomaterials Engineering is the formation of professional with knowledge in the field of biomaterials in such as way to enable them to employ studies and technologies aiming at the preservation of the environment and at the welfare of human activities. The programs aims at fostering e consolidating research directed to the development of knowledge in the production of new materials, either under a basic or applied point of view, both cases focused on knowledge and technology transfer to the different areas of society. The basic research are centered in the acquisition of knowledge about the characterization of plant fibers, materials resistance, materials electronics, nanosciences and nanotechnologies. Research of applied character contemplate the production techniques and evaluation of structural and non-structural evaluation and food materials, using plant fibers and productive chain residues from agribusiness as raw material.

Target audience:

Professionals graduated in Forest Engineering, Food Engineering, Materials Engineering, Civil Engineering, Agronomy, Agricultural Engineering, Chemistry Engineering, Mechanic Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, Physic Engineering and related fields.

Lines of Research

The program in Biomaterials Engineering is divided in two areas (Lignocellulosic Composites and Nanocomposites and Food Products and Nanoproducts). The candidate will choose one of the areas in the moment of their enrollment.

Lignocellulosic Composites and Nanocomposites

It comprehends technical and scientific studies of cellulosic particles, fibers and nanofibers to reinforce composites, micro and nano celluloses transistors , adhesive nanoparticles, elaboration of functionalized coatings for incorporation of nanoparticles or nanoscales, fiber cement, plastic-wood composites and base of agricultural residues. Providing subsides both for the production of new materials as well as for studies and policies related to intellectual protection, business incubator and technologies transfer through Scientific and Technological Site in Lavras.

Food Products and Nanoproducts

It involves research related to the development of products in the field of food science – nano composites. Nanoparticles have large applications to the food area involving both food products themselves as well as food packages and films. These nanoparticles present high-level surface area which, when spread in food or polymeric matrix, promote changes in the molecular dynamics that change the physical, chemical and sensorial properties of products. These properties, either from food added to the nanoparticles, functional packages, bionanocomposites, polymeric packages or films with nanocompounds or packaged food in such polymers must be evaluated concerning the chemical, physical and sensorial characteristics to achieve success in consumers’ market.
